Our third Infrastructure Intelligence Live In the Spotlight interview of 2021 takes place this week, on Wednesday 8 September, and features one of the leading figures in the UK construction and infrastructure sector, Andy Mitchell CBE, co-chair of the Construction Leadership Council (CLC) and CEO of Thames Tideway.

The CLC provides cross-sector leadership to the construction industry and is a key and influential voice for the industry with government and other key stakeholders and opinion formers. The CLC convened and led the industry’s response to the Covid-19 pandemic and has been praised for its work in bringing together the industry, pooling resources and working collaboratively to support industry change.  

Under Andy Mitchell’s leadership, the CLC has forged an effective working relationship with government, highlighted by its engagement in developing the Industry Recovery Plan. This live interview will give our readers the chance to ask Andy about his views on how the industry is emerging from the pandemic and the prospects for the future.

Post-Covid, the construction sector will play a vital role in the economic rebalancing of the UK. The sector’s output comprises 8% of GDP and it employs over 10% of the UK workforce. The homes, schools, hospitals, and railways that the industry is set to deliver will underpin the UK’s future low-carbon growth ambitions. As someone who leads the key leadership organisation for construction, Andy Mitchell’s views on a range of issues will be well worth listening to and he is sure to have much to say about the CLC’s three key innovation enablers of: -

• Digital - delivering better, more certain outcomes by using BIM enabled ways of working.
• Manufacturing - increasing the proportion of off-site manufacture to improve productivity, quality and safety.
• Whole-life performance - getting more out of new and existing assets through the use of smart technologies. 

Andy has wide experience in the construction sector. As well as currently being CEO of infrastructure mega-project Tideway, he was previously programme director and board member at Crossrail and has managed a number of high-profile projects both in the United Kingdom and overseas.  After 12 years working in the United Arab Emirates, France and South Africa and on major developments such as Hong Kong Airport and the Hong Kong West Rail, he joined Network Rail in 2001. He was project director for Network Rail’s Southern Power Upgrade project and was also the major programme director of the Thameslink Programme.  

Andy is a fellow of the Institution of Civil Engineers, a Fellow of the Royal Academy of Engineering, former chair of the Infrastructure Industry Innovation Platform and the Infrastructure Client Group and since 2018 has been co-chair of the Construction Leadership Council.  He was awarded the CBE for his services to civil engineering.
