Nordex Group will install three wind turbines in Türkiye

Rönesans Enerji has invested in three wind turbine projects with the Nordex Group to reduce CO2 emissions and provide electricity for hundreds of thousands of households across Türkiye through renewable sources.

This project marks Rönesans Enerji’s first renewable investment after TotalEnergies acquired a 50% stake in Rönesans Enerji last month.

Through Heitkamp Industrial Solutions GmbH, a German-based construction subsidiary of Rönesans Holding, Nordex will install landmark wind turbines across Türkiye - charting a path towards achieving the country’s net zero goals. 

With a total installed capacity of 189 MW across three Turkish provinces, approximately 380,000 households will see their electricity consumption met, with around 370,000 tonnes of CO2 emissions prevented annually.

Dr Erman Ilıcak, president of Rönesans Holding, and İpek Ilıcak Kayaalp, chairperson of the board at Rönesans Holding, had previously announced Rönesans' commitment to reach net zero by 2040, with an intermediate goal of reducing their emissions by 55% by 2030 compared to 2022.

Emre Hatem, vice president of the board of directors of Rönesans Enerji, said: “Rönesans Energy currently has a total installed capacity of 166 MW with its six hydroelectric power plant (HPP) projects.

With these three new projects with Nordex, our total installed capacity will increase to 355 MW. We aim to continue growing with a 100% renewable energy portfolio and aspire to become one of Türkiye's top three green energy companies.” 

With Heitkamp acting as the main contractor across the construction and electrical works, the initial phase of Rönesans Enerji’s investments is now well underway. Renowned globally for its part in the construction of the world’s longest and deepest railway tunnel, the Gotthard Base Tunnel, Heitkamp will also install 154 kV power transmission lines for the project.

The three projects will all be supplied with N163/6.X turbines mounted on 113-metre steel towers, with a rotor diameter of 163 meters. These turbines have the highest capacity commercially available in Türkiye, with a capacity of 7 MW. Expected to be operational by the end of 2024, a significant portion of the turbine equipment including tower, blade and generator production will be sourced and produced locally in Türkiye, ensuring reinvestment back into the economy.

In October last year, the Turkish Energy Ministry announced the country’s renewable objectives, including to reach 30 GW of onshore and offshore wind power capacity by 2035. Rönesans Enerji’s investment with Nordex Group will play a vital role in that transition and is one of many renewable projects the company plans to invest in over the coming years. Along with its partners GIC, Meridiam Infrastructure, Sojitz, Samsung C&T, and IFC, of the World Bank Group (minority shareholder in the group), Rönesans has invested more than seven billion Euros into pioneering projects in Türkiye.
