THIS FRIDAY: Webinar to focus on role of placemaking and levelling up

The Infrastructure Intelligence Live series of events continues on Friday 25 June 2021 with a webinar looking at the placemaking and how this can contribute to the government's efforts to close the north-south divide.

In a post-Covid environment, the emergence of a ‘new normal’ means that development models now need to be reassessed to ensure that new homes are spacious, light and airy, and that people are able to go shopping, spend time in nature or to see a doctor within a 10-15-minute walk from home. Placemaking is more important than ever before and the importance of access to public open spaces, better infrastructure and greater engagement and understanding of existing local communities is crucial.

The government's shake up of the planning laws has been portrayed as an attempt to encourage more development and level up the UK, however ministers' plans for reform have come under the spotlight following the recent by election result in Chesham and Amersham where the Conservatives lost a seat that had a very large majority and many blamed the defeat on disatisfaction with the government's new planning proposals. It raises the question of whether the government can level up the north while maintaining support in its traditional heartlands. As ever, the issue of planning and development is a very hot topic.

Our expert panel will explore the concept of placemaking and what this also means for the government’s ‘levelling up’ agenda as it seeks to redress the economic imbalance between north and south.
