TfL awards £220m London Underground track contract to Balfour Beatty

Balfour Beatty has landed a £220m contract from Transport for London (TfL) to deliver London Underground track renewal works.

The four-year contract covers all aspects of track renewals including track, points and crossings, and trackside drainage across over 1,047km of the network.

Starting in April, with an option to extend the contract for a further six years, the contract builds on top of a previous eight-year agreement with Balfour Beatty, which TfL says contributed to modernising around 75% of the Tube network.

The project will employ up to 300 staff at its peak, including a number of apprenticeship and graduate opportunities. The firm will also introduce new measures and technologies such as remote surveying systems and viewing software to generate efficiencies and reduce disruption.

London Underground’s director for renewals & enhancements, Caroline Sheridan, said: “Track maintenance and renewal is an essential part of keeping London moving. This contract will help us to continue to provide better, more reliable journeys for our customers, while continuing to drive staff safety.”

Balfour Beatty say detailed knowledge and experience of London Underground’s infrastructure and systems, as well as its commitment to championing innovation was instrumental in securing the contract.

Mark Bullock, Balfour Beatty’s chief executive officer for its Rail and Utilities business, said: “This award is testament to our continued focus on driving innovative solutions that deliver sustainable, safer rail infrastructure at reduced cost. Utilising our deep knowledge and unrivalled expertise of the rail infrastructure market, we will continue to upgrade this renowned underground network and keep London moving.”
