Arcadis and Turner & Townsend extend nuclear decommissioning deal

Magnox appoints Turner & Townsend and Arcadis on major nuclear decommissioning programme.

Turner & Townsend and Arcadis have been re-appointed to provide project controls and commercial services to support the decommissioning and management of UK nuclear sites by Magnox.

The equal partnership between Turner & Townsend and Arcadis will support Magnox as it continues with its existing decommissioning programme and its future missions.

The subsidiary of the Nuclear Decommissioning Authority currently oversees the safe management and decommissioning of 12 Magnox nuclear sites. Magnox will also decommission EDF’s existing advanced gas cooled reactor fleet as they transfer on a rolling basis after defueling and join with Dounreay in the near future.

Turner & Townsend and Arcadis have been providing services to Magnox in partnership since 2012. Jointly the consultants provide a wide range of services including project, cost, contract and risk management, as well as quantity surveying – working to improve overall programme efficiency and predictability across Magnox’s UK-wide programme.

A key part of the work has been driving delivery and change within Magnox as it evolves in its current decommissioning and site management role. Turner & Townsend and Arcadis have been central to supporting this journey, delivering service excellence across the sites and assisting Magnox to safely and efficiently decommission its stations.

Richard Simpkins, director at Turner & Townsend, said: “Our re-appointment to support this major decommissioning programme reflects our strong credibility and experience in the nuclear sector. It builds on the excellent partnership we have with Arcadis and the relationship we have developed with Magnox over the past nine years. The programme is one of the most complex, long-term, environmental challenges in Europe, and we will be working side by side as one team to ensure it is delivered safely, securely and cost-effectively as we continue on this journey.”

Paul Reeve, nuclear business director at Arcadis, said: “I am delighted for our two companies and for our combined delivery team in securing the re-appointment to the Magnox Ltd framework. The re-appointment is a testament to the hard work our partnership has put in over the last decade, providing true collaboration, delivery and stability through difficult times with Covid-19 in recent years. I couldn’t be prouder of the team on the ground and we look forward to supporting Magnox on this interesting mission, with a renewed focus to embrace innovation, digitisation, sustainability and social value alongside service delivery over the duration of the framework.”
