Firefighters tackle huge blaze at Nottingham train station

Nottingham train station has been evacuated and all train services have been suspended as firefighters continue to tackle a huge blaze.

The fire which broke out at 6.30am this morning had ten fire crews as its peak in attendance in an attempt to control the blaze. An evacuation of the station took place as flames continued to billow from the station's roof and smoke filled the foyer. Fire crews believe the fire started in a station toilet.

John Mills, group manager for Nottinghamshire Fire and Rescue Service, told the BBC: "It has been an incredibly demanding incident, our crews have worked very hard to try and contain it. We always have as our first priority lives at risk, so it was initially person's reported because this has happened in the midst of rush hour. “It was a busy time for the station and a busy time for the city."

East Midlands Trains said while no-one was injured and everyone was accounted for, all services, including trains to London St Pancras, Liverpool, Leicester and Norwich, have been disrupted. A spokesman added: “Please do not travel to Nottingham station this morning as trains will be unable to run and we are unable to provide road transport to/from the station.”

In 2014, a two-year transformation programme of the station was completed, marking the culmination of a £50m investment in the city’s railway. A new southern concourse was opened along with various improvements including a new modernised station entrance complete with a pedestrianised area, ticket office, multi-storey car park and cycle hub. The transformation of the station was funded by Network Rail, East Midlands Trains, The Railway Heritage Trust and Nottingham City Council.

The station which is estimated to be used by more than seven million passengers every year, is likely to be closed for the rest of the day, according to Nottinghamshire Fire and Rescue Service.
