AECOM wins contract for site investigation of Liverpool Cruise Liner Terminal

AECOM has been appointed to manage and supervise the site investigation works for a new cruise liner terminal for Liverpool City Council.

The council plans to develop a new cruise terminal in Liverpool that will allow the city to accommodate more cruise ships with improved passenger handling facilities. The plan is to double the number of cruise liner visits to the city by working with operators to increase the city’s attractiveness as a visitor destination.

AECOM will deliver the site investigation which will involve a preliminary desk study, overseeing and implementing a complex river and land based geotechnical and environmental site investigation and carrying out geophysical surveys followed by a jack-up drilling rig. AECOM will work closely with the council, related technical teams and the various stakeholders involved, taking into consideration Liverpool’s busy cruise schedule.

Doug Lewis, associate director and ground engineering lead at AECOM, said: “We are delighted to be working closely with Liverpool City Council on this important project which will help encourage more investment and visitors to this iconic city. This project has already opened up other opportunities for AECOM along the river Mersey and we look forward to working with the council and its other stakeholders.”

Liverpool has seen a significant amount of investment and development over the last ten years with the Liverpool Waters scheme transforming the city’s waterfront. The first phase of £1bn of investment is already completed and phase two comprises of a further £1bn of investment with planning permission in place. The remaining three phases total £3bn.

The new cruise liner terminal will form part of a 60 hectare historic dockland site to create a world class mixed use waterfront quarter in central Liverpool.
