Tottenham’s new stadium set to finally open as club confirms test events

The construction saga of Tottenham’s new stadium finally looks like it’s coming to an end as the club’s chairman reveals details of two test events which should see a formal safety certificate being achieved.

If everything runs smoothly in these events then the opening match at the new stadium will be either against Crystal Palace on April 3 or against Brighton on the weekend of April 6 and 7.

The two matches scheduled will be played before the end of March and provide fans with potentially their first glimpse inside the new stadium, with games featuring the club’s academy side and a Legends team on March 24 and 30 respectively.

After holding discussions with the Premier League and UEFA, it has been agreed with the former and both Brighton and Crystal Palace that the club’s first game is a Premier League match prior to a UEFA Champions League quarter-final match.

The stadium’s leading contractor, Mace, was due to finish the new ground by last September but a series of issues have delayed the opening. In January, Spurs announced it would once again have to push back the official opening after Mace identified that more testing was needed.

Commenting on the opening, Spurs chairman Daniel Levy, said: “We are delighted that we shall be able to welcome our supporters to the stadium and our players of the past and the future to take to the pitch on what will be momentous occasions for our club. Please do come and see your new stadium and share these moments. Thank you all once again. Your support has been much appreciated during a challenging but exciting time.”

A selection of tickets for the two test events will be offered to members of our local community on a complimentary basis to thank them for their understanding and bearing with the club through the disruption and inconvenience caused by our stadium construction works.
