The winners of the annual Association for Project Management (APM) Awards 2023 have been announced at a prestigious awards ceremony in London.

The awards, sponsored by RPC UK Ltd, celebrate excellence within the project profession – from project organisations, projects, programmes and individuals working across a broad range of industry sectors in the UK and internationally.

Fujitsu’s Commonwealth Games Telecommunications Infrastructure Project was named Technology Project of the Year at this year’s event, an award that recognises and rewards projects that progress technology and communication change across all sectors to deliver considerable benefit to end users.

It is given to the team whose project demonstrates the most effective use of project management and the greatest benefits and outcomes to end users in technology and communication projects.

The project was selected for providing telecommunications infrastructure and associated services, which enabled both in-venue and games wide connectivity, critical communications and internet access services to support the Commonwealth Games.

Fujitsu had just 137 working days to deliver the solution after a previous provider was unable to deliver the project.

Despite these constraints of delivering a project that was originally meant to take 18 months, Fujitsu delivered the project to time, scope and budget.

Kevin Hill, sales lead for the project, said: "I'm so grateful it's an amazing achievement.

"We came in late and only had 137 days to go, an unmovable deadline and a fixed budget.

"Without delivering on time, the Games wouldn’t have happened. It was an unbelievable effort by the team to get it done in the time we had."

Professor Adam Boddison OBE, Chief Executive of APM, said: “I would like to congratulate Fujitsu for its outstanding commitment to excellence in project delivery.

"The project has overcome a huge challenge in the face of immovable deadlines.

“Our awards are all about celebrating the outstanding successes of the project profession, and I would like to congratulate all of this year’s winners and finalists for their incredible achievements over the past year.”

Fujitsu believes the project is a great example of integrated project management working in tandem with the customer, receiving their highest praise.

In all the Fujitsu project included delivery to a final total of 30 sites and venues, supporting the 72 Commonwealth Countries’ teams taking part in 20 sports, including para-sports.

The sites and venues included brand new builds, such as the Sandwell Aquatics Centre, as well as others repurposed from the 2012 Olympics or engaged specifically for the duration of the Games.
