Babita Sharma to host Consultancy and Engineering Awards

BBC journalist and acclaimed writer Babita Sharma is to host the Consultancy and Engineering Awards on 3 November.

Award-winning broadcast journalist and author Babita Sharma has been announced as presenter for this year’s Consultancy and Engineering Awards, which takes place in central London on Thursday 3 November 2022.

Only a handful of tickets remain for the awards ceremony - one of the most keenly anticipated nights in the industry calendar - which this year features a number of brand new categories as the event returns to a live venue for the first time since the pandemic.

Sharma is the author of the critically acclaimed book, The Corner Shop published by Two Roads. The book charts the social history of this unsung hero of British life. Growing up above a corner shop in 1980s Britain, Sharma gives a fascinating perspective of the political and economic climate during her childhood through the lens of corner shop life. The Corner Shop was awarded a Business Book Award in 2020.

Sharma has also presented across BBC Global News where she spent a decade as news anchor for Newsday, covering global news events including the pandemic, the Black Lives Matter movement, US Elections in 2020, Brexit and the Trump/Kim summit in Singapore.

As a documentarian, she has presented several television documentaries, including her landmark series Dangerous Borders: The Story of India & Pakistan on BBC Two took her to the India/Pakistan border 70 years after partition. Here she followed in the footsteps of her family who were directly affected at the time of partition.

She is passionate about diversity and mental health issues; mentoring BAME journalists and also working with charity Mind to raise mental health awareness in schools. Alongside the Foreign and Commonwealth Office and BBC Media Action, Sharma has also developed presenter-training programmes for aspiring young journalists in London, Cambodia and Myanmar.

Commenting on the Awards, Babita Sharma said: “It’s a personal honour to be joining ACE and the sector for an evening of celebration. The industry has a vital role to play in delivering a better future for us all – greener and truly sustainable cities and towns, better connected communities, more productive and socially valuable places, and growth across the country.”

“I’m delighted to be able to join the industry as you take a moment to pause and reflect on recent successes achieved in unpredictable circumstances and I’m looking forward to discovering the great people, projects and businesses that have been leading by example.”
