Leeds City Council announce contractors for delivering £90m transport network

BAM Nuttall has been selected by Leeds City Council as one of the two main construction partners for a £90m programme of public transport works aimed at improving all aspects of the network in the region.

Together with John Sisk & Son, BAM will be tasked with delivering the Leeds public transport investment programme (LPTIP) which is part of the wider, long-term Connecting Leeds strategy.

BAM has been selected for Contract 1 - the design and construction of bus priority corridors and park & ride sites. While John Sisk has been awarded Contract 2 - city centre gateways, focused on works in and around the city centre.

Over the coming weeks the delivery options will be evaluated on a potential £90m of improvement work. The programme is funded through the Department for Transport, Leeds City Council and the West Yorkshire Combined Authority.

Gareth Farrier, BAM Nuttall divisional director, said: “BAM Nuttall is delighted to be a part of Leeds Public Transport Investment Programme. It’s extremely satisfying to maintain and grow our presence, along with our designers Mott MacDonald, in such a vibrant and ambitious city. We are excited at the prospect of working collaboratively with the Council and all of the other stakeholders to deliver their vision, and to have a positive influence on the lives and futures of the people connected with Leeds through smart and sustainable engineering.”

The broad aim for the successful partners is to promote a more sustainable and environmental friendly network which enhanced cycling and walking options and improving air quality through reduced congestion which can be achieved by maximising the space and efficiency of the road network.

Councillor Richard Lewis, Leeds City Council executive member for regeneration, transport and planning, added: “I welcome the appointment of our new construction delivery partners, as we’re very keen to progress this work. It’s a big step in the process of helping to make our transport network as fast, efficient, reliable, accessible and green as we can. In keeping with our commitment to delivering on what people told us they want, we can’t do everything at once."
