On the move – industry appointments

Global engineering, design and advisory practice Buro Happold has appointed Deepak Chotwani as regional managing director, India. 

As a partner and member of the global leadership team, he takes responsibility for the overall business across Buro Happold’s India region, leading on key strategic and growth initiatives, as well as the development of the business and its people.

He has held a number of senior leadership roles at Buro Happold since 2013 and has a rich variety of experience of more than 20 years spanning four continents. 

Chotwani previously managed Buro Happold’s business in APAC, working with the regional teams to develop the Hong Kong and China business and providing strategic direction to the regional leadership. 

He has an MBA in finance and marketing from the University of Wales UK, and a degree in finance from the University of Rajasthan.

“Being named managing director of this growing region allows me to contribute to both Buro Happold’s success and India's evolving story,” he said.

“India will continue to grow exponentially which means the opportunities it will present, and the impact India has on the global economy, will only continue to increase.” 

Infrastructure group Balfour Beatty has announced that Gabrielle Costigan MBE has been appointed as a non-executive director with effect from March 8, 2024.

Following Balfour Beatty’s Annual General Meeting on May 9, she  will succeed Stuart Doughty CMG as chair of the Safety and Sustainability Committee, as he steps down from the board following nine-years as a non-executive director.

Costigan is an aeronautical engineer with a diverse international career including 21 years in the Australian Army. 

She was previously chief executive officer of the logistics business, Linfox International Group. In 2017, she joined BAE Systems plc as chief executive officer of BAE Systems Australia before being promoted to her current role of group managing director, business development and a member of the executive committee.

She said: “From military service to work in the defence industry, I’ve always been motivated by work that makes a meaningful difference.

"I look forward to contributing my leadership and operational experience in support of Balfour Beatty’s very real contribution to global economies and communities.”

Design firm Stantec has appointed Dave Calder to regional growth leader for the global region for Stantec’s Buildings practice. 

As an integral member of the Buildings leadership team, Calder will act as a liaison with the firm’s global colleagues and support Buildings growth and development across all sectors and all disciplines for regions outside of North America.

Calder previously served as the global sector leader for Industrial where he oversaw the planning, design, and management of a wide range of projects as well as serving as the account manager for some of Buildings’ largest client accounts. 

His recent work includes Qcells, the largest solar panel manufacturing plant being built in the Western Hemisphere, and a recent advanced manufacturing project win in the UK.

In his new role, Calder will be responsible for strategic planning, growth strategy for new global markets, developing key client accounts, and driving alignment across sectors, business centers, and global regions. 

He will contribute to revenue growth through strategic regional initiatives, organic and acquisitive growth, client capture strategy, service expansion, and client engagement.

Harrogate-based property and investment company Bramall Properties has announced the appointment of Jonathan Duck to its board as property director. 

Having already spent nine years with Bramall Group, he joins the board alongside founder and chairman Tony Bramall, managing director Miles Chilton, and company secretary Alison Lockwood. 

Duck is a highly experienced commercial property professional with over 35 years of industry experience.  He previously worked with the estates team at British Rail Property Board before joining Sanderson Weatherall where he spent 27 years. 

As a board director at Bramall Properties, he will take a more strategic role in managing the property portfolio.
